Tarpon. Tarpon occur in the tropical waters of the Western Hemisphere. Tarpon can gulp air directly into its air bladder by "rolling" on the surface and as a result, the Tarpon is able to enter brackish and fresh waters that are stagnant and virtually free of oxygen. Also known by anglers as the Silver King, Tarpon do not reach maturity until they are 6 or 7 years old. The tarpon is a mighty sporting fish that can make even the strongest angler beg for mercy. Tarpon are traditionally released alive and unharmed, and are not good to eat. Information provided by The International Game Fish Association.
